EU to hold special hearing on mining impacts

On the 2nd December 2021, the European Parliament's Petitions and Environment committees will hold a special hearing on the subject of the 'Environmental and social impacts of mining activity in the EU.

The EU is to hold a special hearing on the subject of the Environmental and social impacts of mining activity in the EU’.

At this hearing, two EU Parliament researchers will present the findings of their research into the question of the impacts of mining in Europe.

Their presentation of findings will be followed by expert testimony from hydrologist Dr Steve Emerman, who will discuss mining standards and the ecological harms of European mining.

Dr Alexander Dunlap will then present on the social harms of mining, transparency and citizen participation in mining processes. 

Finally, Elena Solis from YLNM member organisation Ecologistas en Accíon (Spain), will adress the issue of civil society experiences engaging with the EU on mining issues.
