Haiti: Permanent Crisis or Historical Punishment?

When Haiti is showcased on international media, it is almost always associated with the same words: crisis, violence, poverty, or disaster. In the public imagination, the country is often portrayed as a territory condemned to permanent instability.
Yet the historical and political reasons that help explain this image are rarely discussed.
Haiti is frequently described as the poorest country in the Americas and as a nation trapped in an endless crisis. However, this narrative leaves out a fundamental question: how did Haiti arrive at this situation?
To begin answering this question, we must look back at its origins as a nation.
In 1804, Haiti became the first Black republic in the world and the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to definitively abolish slavery. Its independence was the result of a revolution led by enslaved people who defeated one of the most powerful colonial empires of the time.
But that victory came at an enormous cost. In 1825, France forced Haiti to pay a colossal indemnity to former slaveholding colonists in exchange for recognizing its independence. That debt—one that the country took more than a century to repay—deeply burdened its economy.
Haiti is likely the only country in the world that had to pay for more than a century for having won its freedom.
“The problem is that Haiti, historically speaking, is the country that led the most radical revolution in the history of the world,” explains Haitian sociologist Jean Eddy Saint Paul, a professor at Brooklyn College.
“The Haitian Revolution was carried out under the slogan ‘Liberty or Death,’ in the name of citizenship and socioeconomic rights. But after the assassination of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the leader of the revolution, the economy began to function as a semi-feudal system,” he adds.
Over time, Saint Paul notes, economic and political power became concentrated in the hands of a small group of actors linked to the private sector and to alliances with external powers.
“Today the country’s economy is in the hands of a few, and the vast majority of Haitians do not participate in its benefits,” he summarizes.
This combination of historical legacies, internal inequalities, and international pressures helps explain why Haiti faces enormous political, economic, and social challenges today.
But reducing the country solely to its crisis also obscures another reality: that of a society which, throughout its history, has built multiple forms of resistance, organization, and defense of its territory.
In the coming months, we will explore some of the questions that are often left out of conversations about Haiti: What economic interests are at stake in its territory? Why are certain extractive projects presented as solutions for development? And what impacts could they have on communities and the environment?
Looking at Haiti through these questions allows us to move beyond stereotypes and to understand that its history—marked by a revolution that changed the world—continues to shape the struggles unfolding in the country today.
“Because of its history, Haiti is a country that the powerful actors of the international community will not forgive,” Saint Paul says. “But the Haitian people have an enormous capacity for resistance.”

Haití: ¿crisis permanente o castigo histórico?

Cuando Haití aparece en las noticias internacionales casi siempre está asociado a las mismas palabras: crisis, violencia, pobreza o desastre. En el imaginario global, el país suele ser presentado como un territorio condenado a la inestabilidad permanente.
Pero rara vez se habla de las razones históricas y políticas que explican esa imagen.
Haití es frecuentemente descrito como el país más pobre de América y como una nación atrapada en una crisis sin fin. Sin embargo, esa narrativa deja fuera una pregunta fundamental: ¿cómo llegó Haití a esta situación?
Para empezar a responder hay que mirar hacia su origen como nación.
En 1804 Haití se convirtió en la primera república negra del mundo y en el primer país de América Latina y el Caribe en abolir definitivamente la esclavitud. Su independencia fue el resultado de una revolución protagonizada por personas esclavizadas que derrotaron a uno de los imperios coloniales más poderosos de la época.
Pero esa victoria tuvo un precio enorme. En 1825, Francia obligó a Haití a pagar una indemnización colosal a los antiguos colonos esclavistas a cambio de reconocer su independencia. Esa deuda, que el país tardó más de un siglo en pagar, hipotecó profundamente su economía.
Haití es, probablemente, el único país del mundo que tuvo que pagar durante más de un siglo por haber conquistado su libertad.
“El problema es que Haití, históricamente hablando, es el país que abanderó la revolución más radical en la historia del mundo”, explica el sociólogo haitiano Jean Eddy Saint Paul, profesor en Brooklyn College.
“La Revolución Haitiana se hizo bajo el lema ‘Libertad o Muerte’, en nombre de la ciudadanía y de los derechos socioeconómicos. Pero después del asesinato de Jean-Jacques Dessalines, el líder de la revolución, la economía empezó a funcionar como una economía semifeudal”, profundizó.
Con el paso del tiempo, señala Saint Paul, el poder económico y político fue concentrándose en manos de un pequeño grupo de actores vinculados al sector privado y a alianzas con poderes externos.
“Hoy la economía del país está en manos de unos pocos, y la gran mayoría de los haitianos no participa de sus beneficios”, resume.
Esta combinación de herencias históricas, desigualdades internas y presiones internacionales ayuda a entender por qué Haití enfrenta hoy enormes desafíos políticos, económicos y sociales.
Pero reducir el país únicamente a su crisis también oculta otra realidad: la de una sociedad que, a lo largo de su historia, ha construido múltiples formas de resistencia, organización y defensa de su territorio.
En los próximos meses exploraremos algunas de las preguntas que suelen quedar fuera de la conversación sobre Haití: ¿Qué intereses económicos están en juego en su territorio? ¿Por qué ciertos proyectos extractivos se presentan como soluciones para el desarrollo? Y, ¿qué impactos podrían tener para las comunidades y el medioambiente?
Mirar Haití desde estas preguntas permite ir más allá de los estereotipos y entender que su historia —marcada por una revolución que cambió el mundo— sigue influyendo en las disputas que atraviesan el país hoy.
“Debido a su historia, Haití es un país que los poderosos de la comunidad internacional no van a perdonar”, afirma Saint Paul, “pero el pueblo haitiano tiene una enorme capacidad de resistencia”.
